In 2021, the council converted under-used commercial space into an enterprise centre that provided flexible office space for a range of businesses, from single-person start-ups, to established financial services providers. The facility, managed by Co-Space, brought over 300 jobs into the town centre, and has proved so successful that the council is using Towns Fund money, via the Stevenage Development Board,  to expand into the neighbouring Town Square Chambers that preside over Event Island.  This encourages new business and associated footfall and spend to the town, with the increase in office space creating over 150 new jobs and refurbishing an ageing building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What benefits does the project bring?

The project is delivering essential repairs to an asset that is currently in a poor state and has remained largely empty due to the lack of investment. Visually the property will be refurbished to a higher quality and appearance that will mirror the neighbouring side, where the Co-Space entrance sits.  The overall visual appearance of the property will be improved that will mirror the existing Co-Space entrance, with new windows and a cleaned façade as some of the key deliverables.

The surrounding area will also benefit by bringing the building back into use with a 24-hour operator. Not only does this bring vibrancy and life into the area, but also acts as natural surveillance as opposed to a vacant asset.

The construction is anticipated to take three – four months. It is anticipated the project will be completed in early 2025.
